Skunk Trek

Woo Hoo!

For months I have been waiting for this moment to arrive. My friend Roger and I have been planning and are now finally leaving on a four day backpacking trip along the route of the Skunk Train between Fort Bragg and Willits.

The total distance is 40 miles. The images below show mile markers I compiled via G-Map Pedometer. We think ten miles per day should be about right.

There are a lot of trestles, a couple of tunnels and a train to keep in mind. We will be walking through mostly Redwood Forest. We have a copy of the train schedule with us. Also a filtering waterpump, GPS for keeping track of distance covered and my moleskin sketch pad. Roger is a birder so will have his binoculars and I will have my lightweight camera.

We are also anxious to try out our new gear. I have a Gossimer Gear "Mariposa Plus"backpack, "Neo Air" air mattress and "The One" tent. Roger is trying out a new cuban fiber tarp and a cuban fiber backpack by Z-Pack.

Boys and their toys!!! Perfect!!

We should be back Wednesday the 17th of June.

Meanwhile, I highly recommend keeping track of:
Roz who is rowing across the pacific
Phil's blog the world we mostly ignore
Life in Japan a couple doing the simple complex life
and other links over there on the left.

Have a great weekend.

  4. Hi Ron,

Hope the trip is going well and the new gear working well for you. I'd be very interested in a write up of the Mariposa Plus if you get chance. I have my eye on one for the coast to coast trip and any reviews are useful.

  6. Hi Ron!

Thank you so much for the link to Roz's blog in your absence.

I seem to have spent all of my free time this week catching up with her current adventure and retrospectively reading over her previous trips. Absolutely fantastic.
