Peeking Through the Fence

Fort Bragg is the strangest "Seaside" town. As you can see in this map our whole waterfront is off limits behind a fence that is over two miles long.

" No trespassing" "Private property"

The lumber mill closed in the 1990's. Currently there is toxic clean-up in progress. I'm told it is going to take two or three more years before that process is over. Meanwhile, "No Trespassing".

So I walked the edge and take photos through the fence.

Most of what I see I know nothing about but in this photo are some of the kiln drying sheds. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This is one of the guard shacks where the workers entered the property. Redwood lumber was king for over one hundred years but on these 400 acre's, it is all over now.

Saturday Morning Drizzle

It was clear as a bell last evening but I woke to a surprise this morning. But the damp didn't dampen my desire to walk. The clean fresh air. The peace and quiet. Nice.

I see the siding is going up on the MendoLake Credit Union and this bike seems to live by this post.

"Not tonight dear, didn't you read the sign?"

Ah! another shopping cart for my photography collection.

This afternoon there is going to be a photography expedition lead by photographers from The Mendocino Coast Photographer Guild and Gallery. I think we are going to explore the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.

Do photographers get rained out? I think not!

Hi Mom!

Remember the "web cam" I mentioned in the previous blog? I happened to notice the gate was open at the job site this morning so I called my brother in Coupeville, Washington and asked him to "log onto" the MendoLake webpage and do a "print screen" of me and then e-mail it to me!

Bingo!!

That's me "multi-tasking"; talking to my brother on the cellphone and waving at the same time! By the way, I notice they have not corrected their video camera for standard time. This photo was taken at 6:33 and twenty seconds!!

Progress is progressing on the alley re-do between Main and Franklin, Alder and Redwood.

This is the machine that "eats" the old asphalt. Notice how the "tracts" are adjustable for different heights. Quite a remarkable machine.

I noticed the new street signs are in place along Franklin Street. I like them!

Today's Astronomy Photo of the Day informs me the planet, in the moon photo I took on the 5th of November, was Venus, not Saturn.

Web Cam

As you can see in the distance the construction of the MendoLake Credit Union is well underway. An interesting byproduct of this job site is their web camera

mounted on the power pole by the contractor's job-site trailer. The camera is aimed towards the southwest (towards the corner of Main and Oak). If you want to see a real-time image of the project AND our local weather click on http://www.mlcu.org/ then enlarge the image on the right of the web page.

I don't really like advertising on blogs and I don't beat the drum for this or that but I must admit, "Down Home Foods" is a great little market. I get my Organic Rolled Oats there for 97 cents per pound!

Noticing Stuff

I'm out the door 6:00 AM STANDARD time "Whoo Hoo!" and the first thing I notice is a planet right next to our waning moon! I have been sort of watching for our latest comet, Holmes, but this is probably Saturn.

Last evening my wife and I were returning home, turned the corner at Main and Laurel and I noticed this tree! By golly, this is what they are talking about putting in on Franklin street. This morning, I made sure to walk by and take a photo showing the complete example. Not only the tree but also the "tree guard" and seating bench.

And then I noticed that there was not only the tree on the northeast corner of Main and Laurel but there was another type of tree, Maple?, across the street on the southeast corner of Main and Laurel!

And then, feeling like a complete fool, I noticed the tree across the Highway on the southwest corner of Main and Laurel!

And here is another on the northwest corner of Main and Laurel!! I don't know why Mr. Walking and Blogging and Photographing guy didn't ever notice these trees. Maybe too much forest!
At Pudding Creek I noticed this pair of feeding Egrets.

Here is what has become known as the "Too Narrow Trail" crossing the recently refurbished Pudding Creek Trestle. For some reason the walking/biking trail ended up just under eight feet wide on a trestle that is sixteen feet wide!

Another unfortunate thing. This Pudding Creek Beach area is very popular for local and tourist alike but there is not a single garbage container, recycle container, dog poop station or out house anywhere to be found.

No wonder people leave trash and who knows what else on the beach.

Ongoing S'pearmint

I have been noting the time the sun clears the coastal hills by photographing "First Light" on the old Mill building from the same location on Maple Street. This morning's photo was taken at 7:53. Tomorrow it will most likely be 8:00 AM but Sunday it will be 7:08 AM.

June 11th the sun cleared the coastal hills by 6:05 AM!

I am really looking forward to Standard Pacific Time returning with more light for my morning walk!!

Prep work continues in the alley between Main Street and Franklin. This little "Bobcat" has an asphalt grinding attachment on the front and is removing material by the Golden West, a bar/saloon that survived the 1906 earthquake.

Yesterday afternoon I notice one of the city workers applying blue paint indicating handicap parking.

Looks good.

My brother commented on the Orange Trees planted along the new Franklin Street re-do! I had to inform him these "trees" are only temporary. But I got to thinking how Fort Bragg's east and west streets are named after trees and I got to thinking wouldn't be appropriate to plant a "variety" of trees like the variety of streets and maybe each tree could be sponsored by someone, business or group like is done with the "Adopt a Highway" program. It could be a cool "green" thing to do.

Knock Knock

" Trick or Treat"

Spider Girl!

All in all, a great bunch of spooks!

We were visited by about a dozen.
